Renting a San Francisco Apartment in the A.I. Boom? Good Luck.
After Roy Lee’s artificial intelligence
startup, Cluely, landed
$5.3 million in venture capital funding this spring, he orchestrated (to arrange something carefully, and
sometimes unfairly, so as to achieve a wanted result精心安排;用心策劃) a San Francisco real estate coup(an
In May, Cluely leased eight apartments for
its employees at a new
luxury complex (a large building with various connected rooms or a related
group of buildings綜合大樓;建築群)—where
rents start at $3,000 a month and reach $12,000 a month for penthouse(an expensive apartment or set of rooms at the top of a hotel
or tall building(豪華的)頂層公寓,屋頂房間) units—just a
one-minute walk from its office in the city’s South of Market neighborhood. The
apartments were a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units in the 16-story
building, which offers a fitness center, a rooftop bar, and concierge (a person who is employed to take care of an apartment
building, especially in France(尤指法國的)大樓管理員,看門人) and housecleaning
services.
Driven by a boom in AI companies like
Cluely, San Francisco’s residential rents have soared (to
rise very quickly to a high level猛增,驟升) the most
in the nation over the past year. Apartment prices in the city rose an average
of 6% in that time, more than double the 2.5% increase in New York City,
according to real estate tracker(a person who is able to find
animals or people by following the marks they leave on the ground as they move
over it追蹤者,追捕者) Costar. That now puts the average rent for a San Francisco
apartment at $3,315 a month, right
behind New York City’s $3,360, which is the nation’s highest.
The AI frenzy’s((an example of) uncontrolled and excited behaviour or emotion that is
sometimes violent瘋狂,狂熱,狂暴) effect on rents has put
pressure on San Francisco’s already strained housing supply, leading to heated competition among techies (someone who knows a lot about computers or other electronic
equipment
to pounce(to jump or move quickly in order to catch or take hold of
Applicants are showing up to apartment tours with
envelopes of cash in hand and waiting in long lines to see properties. And the rejections for
would-be renters are coming fast.
That has raised questions about the
affordability of San Francisco, which has long been one of the most expensive
U.S. cities. Daniel Lurie, the mayor, has made addressing affordable housing a
cornerstone of his policies, while also embracing the growth of local AI
companies like OpenAI
and Anthropic.
Ted Egan, the chief economist for the City
and County of San Francisco, said the city’s market rents today are still below
prepandemic levels
when adjusted for inflation(a發音a). But many service workers who left rent-controlled apartments during
the pandemic would now find it difficult to return, he acknowledged.
“Tech is setting the bar for housing
prices,” Egan said.

What's in a Steak? Europe Food Label Fight.
Buying a veggie(素食的;素的;不包括肉的) burger or a
cauliflower steak(**「花椰菜排」或「椰菜花扒」**) in Europe
may soon be a thing of the past, after lawmakers in the European Parliament voted
Wednesday to restrict the use of terms like “burger’ or ‘’steak” to food made
with meat.
The vote reflects a push by Europe’s
powerful agricultural lobby, which for years has pressed officials to crack down(to start dealing with bad or illegal behaviour in a more
severe way制裁;處罰;打擊;鎮壓) on what they say is the misuse(濫用) of terms associated with cuts of meat(切割的肉類部位). Other
branches of the European Union’s government, the council and the commission,
need to weigh
in(to become involved in an argument or
discussion in a forceful way積極參與(辯論或討論)審議) before the proposal becomes
law in the 27-nation bloc(a group of countries or people that
The proposal states that names such as
burger and steak, along with sausage, hamburger, escalope(a thin piece of
meat without bones薄肉片), egg yolks and egg whites(蛋黃和蛋白), must be used “exclusively for products containing meat,” defined
as “the edible parts of the animals.”
Debate over the proposal has been heated.
“People can eat tofu or test-tube(a
small glass tube with one closed and rounded end, used in scientific
experiments試管) patties(a
piece of food made into a disc shape that is then cooked試管小餡餅,試管漢堡) all they want, but it’s not meat,” said Céline Imart, a member of
the European Parliament who represents a largely agricultural district in
France, who proposed the move. She insisted that allowing nonmeat alternatives
to share terms with animal-based products could mislead consumers.
Proponents of alternatives to meat have
argued that using such well-known terms is sensible, and that consumers are savvy(practical knowledge and ability常識;實際能力) enough to identify the protein
that went into the products they bought.
A change in the law could cost Rügenwalder
Mühle, Germany’s leading producer of alternative meat products, several million
euors, said Claudia Hauschild, a spokesperson for the company.
The company, which also makes one of Germany’s
most beloved sausages, Teewurst(德國下午茶香腸), clearly labels all of its
products, she said. “You really have to try to mix up(to
fail to recognize two people or things correctly by thinking that one person or
thing is the other person or thing混淆;把…弄錯) a vegan
schnitzel(a thin slice of meat, usually veal (= young cow) that is
covered in egg and very small pieces of bread before being fried煎小牛肉片) with a pork schnitzel,” she noted.
A survey conducted by the European Consumer
Organization in 2020 found that a majority of people in Europe were not confused
by nonmeat products that shared the same names as animal-based counterparts, as
long as the packaging clearly labeled them as “vegan,” “plant-based” or “alternative.”
“With everything else going on in the
world, you would think the European Parliament would have better things to do,”
Anna Strolenberg, a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands,
argued.” Let’s work on the stuff that matters and no identity politics for
burgers.”

Jeudi 23 Octobre 2025
Defender.

Taipei, a heavy rainy day~~
Mecredi 22 Octobre 2025

Mardi 21 Octobre 2025
