Street battles are raging(very strong or violent猛烈的;狂暴的;兇猛的) in the Ukraine stronghold(a building or position that is strongly defended要塞,堡壘;據點) of Pokrovsk, where Russian soldiers have entered the city after a nearly yearlong assault (a violent attack毆打;襲擊,攻擊). The breakthrough underscores (to underline(尤指為了強調)在(詞語)下面畫線) the painstaking(extremely careful and correct, and involving a lot of effort認真仔細的,精心的,費盡心思的) pace of Moscow’s military advances, but if Russia eventually takes full control of Pokrovsk it would gain a strategically important bridgehead(a good position that an army has taken in enemy land, from which it can attack the enemy more effectively橋頭陣地,橋頭堡(在敵佔區內奪取的據點)) in eastern Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine
told reporters that about 200 Russian troops had infiltrated (to secretly become part of a group in order to get information
or to influence the way that group thinks or behaves(使)潛入;(使)滲透) the city, but Ukraine soldiers fighting there said this was a
conservative estimate. The Russian units are holding positions in the south of
the city and pushing north, according to online battlefield maps complied by independent groups
and based on combat footage.
“The situation is very difficult because a
significant part of the city has already been infiltrated by the occupiers,” said Denys, a
Ukraine drone operator who gave only his first name according to military protocol.
“They’re still building up their presence, more and more, trying to completely
saturate the city with their forces,” he said.
Ukrainian soldiers say there is now active
street fighting on Pokrovsk. Battlefield
From 維基百科), a group with ties to the Ukrainian military, show large portions of
the city in a grey zone,
indicating areas where control is being contested(a competition to do better than other people,
usually in which prizes are given比賽;競賽).
Pokrovsk, which had a prewar population of
about 60,000, is on a critical road linking several cities that form the last
major defensive (used to protect someone or
something against attack防禦性的,防衛性的) arc (AI~ "Defensive
protecting the
portion of the Donetsk region that Ukraine still
controls. If the city falls,
it would bring Russia closer to achieve its longtime goal of seizing the entire region.
President Vladimir Putin of Russia has said
Russia would agree to stop fighting only if Ukraine ceded Donetsk. The Kremlin
would likely use a capture of Pokrovsk to argue to the Trump administration
that its military advances are inexorable(continuing
without any possibility of being stopped不可阻攔的) and that Ukraine should settle
for a peace deal, even if it means ceding land.
The Ukrainian military is increasingly concerned
that Russian troops are now moving to encircle(to surround something, forming a circle around
it圍繞;環繞) its forces just east of Pokrovsk.
DeepState’s maps show Russian forces
moving in two pincer (one of a pair of curved claws of an animal such as a crab(蟹等動物的)螯;聯合報翻譯:雙面夾擊)movements from the city center and villages to the northeast. Only a
few miles separate the military
advances, forcing Ukrainian reinforcements (the act of making something stronger增強;加強;鞏固;聯合報翻譯:增援部隊) in the area to move through a narrow corridor under constant fire.
